Our Team History

2017 - 2018 First Year in FIRST

The GEarheads started as an FLL team in 2017, we consisted of 10 5th grade students from Swanson Elementary, our team number was 31191. We still have 5 members from then that are with us today - Josef, Mathew, Kartik, Misha, and Josh. That season we made it to sectionals. This season’s theme was hydrodynamics and our project was to create a composting machine that would motivate people to compost in the same way that Fitbit motivates people to take steps and this compost would motivate people to compost. This would cause composting to take over fertilizer helping water quality.

2018 - 2019 Second Year in FIRST

In our second year many of the members of our team changed, Sid is the only one who joined and is still on our team today. That year we had a lot of success. We got first at state advancing us to the world festival and we earned first place for the Research Award. This season’s theme was into orbit our team’s project talked about how debris is becoming an exponentially bigger and bigger problem so we designed solar panels that would be able to retract into the spaceship to avoid debris and be easily repaired.

2019-2020 Third Year in FIRST

After two years of FLL, we as a team decided to compete in FTC. We were one of three FTC teams in our school district. Many of the people that joined our team that year we had seen on different teams at FLL competitions. This was the first year we had members of different ages, our team consisted of 7th-11th graders. We had a great season making our way to the finals at state. This season’s theme was Skystone, for this season we designed a robot that is agile and could position itself very easily. We had trouble using Vuforia and stacking more than 4 blocks consistently.

2021-2022 Fourth Year in FIRST

During our second year of FTC, our members didn’t change that much. We lost some older members to the beast robotics FRC team and others quit because of the pandemic. We got picked by the first alliance, we had a lot of success in the winning alliance at the state competition. This season’s competition theme is the ultimate goal and our strategy was focused on getting as many points as possible in autonomous by preparing for many possibilities with Vuforia. While our Tele-op strategy was based on getting as many rings into the goals as possible.

2022-2023 Fifth Year in FIRST

During our third year of FTC, we gained three new members, Thomas, Vaidehi, and Yuva. This year we had a new team organizational structure, we were focused on being well-rounded, earning us our first Inspire award at the first qualifier we attended. Then at state, we were the winning alliance captain qualifying us for our first World competition as an FTC team, in Houstin Texas.
